Idyllwild Reflects California’s History

The area surrounding Idyllwild is the San Jacinto Mountains. The Cahuilla Native Americans inhabited the area for thousands of years. Of course, during the California Gold Rush, prospectors of the 1860s also explored this area, without success.

Ranchers and loggers followed in the 1870s. Once the San Jacinto Forest Reserve was established in 1897 however, activity was limited until well into the 1920s.

After a lot of wrangling by agencies on all levels from Federal, State, and San Diego County, Idyllwild largely became a small town with private land surrounded by various public reserves.

Today, it is essentially a vacationer’s escape, appropriate for any season, depending on your preferences. If you’d like to learn more about the history visit the Idyllwild Area Historical Society via this link.

The Weather for Idyllwild California

As far as the weather was concerned on this trip, it was mild and comfortable. You might expect a chill in the evenings in the mountains, of course, but this time, we were blessed with that sunny and seventy forecast! In other seasons though you should check forecasts and pack accordingly. Some winters see lots of snowfall while others are quite mild. In the summer, you’ll need to keep an ear open for wildfire warnings and high temps depending on the particular month you plan to stay.

Permits Required in State or National Parks Near Idyllwild California

While many areas require a permit, there are actually no fees for many permits. Also, if you already have an overnight permit, you do not need an additional one for hiking. The two parks where you obtain permits for the area are the U.S. Forest Service and Mt. San Jacinto State Park.

Mount San Jacinto State Park

So if you are in Idyllwild, the State Park you would look up is Mt. San Jacinto State Park. Their official page is linked here for you. I always check whether dogs are allowed, whether permits are required, where to get them, and trailer lengths if I am bringing my shuttle bus conversion.

Just a Handful of State Park Rules To Remember

  • Do not disturb or remove “natural and cultural features” which are protected by law
  • Do not leave any trash behind or “pack out all trash” as most campgrounds and trails commonly say
  • Get your permit to any state park before heading out on the trails and if you’re not 18, grab that parent or guardian
  • In California, check whether campfires are permitted and the conditions for their use

U.S. Forest Service

For the U.S. Forest Service, I always check the app on my phone first. I provided the icon so you can see which download I used. It allows you to download extensive information on road or wildfire closures, hiking trails, permit fees, and more. You can download the app via this link. It is available for both Google Play and the Apple App Store.

Our Stay in the Vacation Rental

Because this short trip was a spontaneous one, we opted for a simple AirBnB in town. It was within walking distance of downtown, had a full kitchen, wi-fi, rustic furnishings, and was quiet despite its central location.

I will tell you, the rates in Idyllwild are generally lower than many other parts of California in our experience. We enjoyed the hot tub one evening and the local brewery and pub just a five-minute walk from our cabin the next evening.

Strawberry Creek in Idyllwild California

My favorite area and experience on this trip was the proximity to Strawberry Creek. I was looking forward to a respite from the noise of city living, cell phone notifications, and all the other clutter of daily life. Sitting by the creek, just listening to the water with my dog at my side was better than anything a doctor could have ordered. To top it off, we were within earshot of the creek. Every little walk, I found my way down there!

It is a running creek even at the height of summer in California and runs through the center of town. There are plenty of spots to seek it out no matter where you stay if you are close to town. Also, there is workout equipment installed along the trail running with the creek.

That Small Mountain Town Feel

This small town offers a nice city center with ice cream shops, tiny art galleries, shopping, restaurants, and several coffee shops. Beware, you are generally walking uphill or downhill wherever you go so pick your shoes accordingly.  Here is a small gallery of pictures taken while roaming on a lazy afternoon. Make sure to stay on the lookout for painted deer throughout the area!

Idyllwild Brewpub and Pure Bean Idy

We ate dinner one evening at the Idyllwild Brewpub and grabbed coffee at Pure Bean Idy. Both were great and worth a second visit if you are staying for a few days. The pretzel and the queso and hone mustard served with it, were absolutely tasty. We also went back the second day for the espresso at the coffee shop as it was quite good. By the way, check out their coffee table, a genuine espresso machine!

Close To Home But Far From It All

While the small town of Idyllwild is quaint, it offers plenty to do. Conversely, it also offers the option to do absolutely nothing if you prefer. The scenery and view are lovely, the traffic is minimal during the week, and it is only two hours from San Diego. I would definitely recommend this destination to any friends or family!
