San Diego Bay Has So Much To Offer

You can explore a restored aircraft carrier or a still functional pirate ship. There are options for dining from high end to flip flop friendly options with amazing food. You can take a cruise on the harbor or let the children play in the fountains and reflecting pools at Waterfront Park. Really, San Diego Bay is a location worth adding to your itinerary.

The Star of India

Ever want to explore a real pirate-like ship? The Star of India in San Diego is the world’s oldest and can still actually sail. Built in 1863 on the Isle of Man in 1863, the Star of India travelled to India six times with all of the usual tragedy and disaster including a mutiny, collision, and a cyclone. After being purchased by the London Shaw Savill line, she carried emigrants to New Zealand, making 21 year-long voyages.

There are tours available and even hosted events like movie nights. Just to stop by and see this beautiful ship from the dock is wonderful.

It saw its fair share of misery of course. As a consequence, today there are documented reports of footsteps and shadows. Shows like Ghost Adventures on the Travel Channel have featured the Star of India. For more information about tickets or the history visit the San Diego Maritime Museum.

County of San Diego Waterfront Park

Now, if it’s a hot day the kids will absolutely love the water fountains at the San Diego County Waterfront Park. Beyond just the fun of splashing, there are ample picnic areas, playground access and green space so you can enjoy the day away from the concrete jungle of Downtown. Maybe even grab a yoga class? How cool is it to do yoga on San Diego Bay? On the day we were there, a lawn church service was in session in one area and a massive yoga class in another.

One aspect of the fountains is how shallow the reflecting pools really are, just a couple inches so even toddlers can play without the risk of drowning. Less stress for a parent on vacation is amazing!

On top of that, there is really colorful art installations throughout the park, just the kind of sparkly mosaics to attract young eyes. Located in the playground areas and park, the sculptures are easy to spot from any vantage point.

The park area is rather large with newer options. Additionally, it is located away from the busy street which for any parent is a plus. With ample walking paths and grassy areas, there is plenty to do. They also have a little snack bar where you can grab a grilled cheese or cup of joe.

The U.S.S. Midway Museum Home on San Diego Bay

USS Midway Museum on San Diego Bay

On San Diego Bay, a huge attraction is the U.S.S. Midway Museum. It is a decommissioned aircraft carrier which features a wonderful collection of aircraft.

Personally, I am always amazed at the sheer size of an aircraft carrier. Living in San Diego, you would think I would get used to huge ships docking in our bay or the Navy ships docked across from downtown San Diego.

Also consider a donation if you visit the site to support the museum. They host school field trips and numerous veteran related organizations who have special celebrations or ceremonies on board the ship.

Even with health restrictions, there are virtual tours and information provided by the museum’s website that are outstanding and incredibly informative.

Embracing Peace Sculpture on San Diego Bay

Beyond the Midway itself, there is the obvious famous statue! Every time I visit there is a couple trying to imitate the pose in this sculpture, Embracing Peace. It’s both cute and nostalgic and no one can complain about the backdrop with the bay and an aircraft carrier.

The adjoining park area has mature trees, grassy areas and memorials. Also, the Famous Market Restaurant is right there, next to the commercial fisherman docks.

Harbor Cruises on San Diego Bay

If you’d like take in the full view of the bay from aboard a ship, there are a number of options. You can cruise and enjoy a meal, get a thrill on a jet boat, even get out of the harbor in search of migrating whales on the open ocean. Flagship Cruises is a 100 year old company and a great option.

If you are more interested in something without a motor, you can actually booking sailing excursions. They are generally a more intimate experience and frankly, more my taste since I enjoy the sounds of the water and wildlife. San Diego Sailing Tours is one option with lots of options, depending on your needs.

Dining Along the Harbor

Growing up in San Diego, there was not always an abundance of restaurants along the harbor. In fact, there were only a handful, most of which were not all that extraordinary. Today, there are wonderful places to dine, grab a bite or catch a great happy hour.

Coconut Margarita at Coasterra

Coasterra

One of favorite happy hours in San Diego turned out to be at Coasterra. Why? Well, the prices were terrific for both the drinks and drinks of course. But truth be told, I discovered my new favorite drink, Deb’s Coconut Margarita. It came highly recommended by a few different friends so I gave it a whirl. It was creamy, a tad sweet and just enough spirits.

The other reason I’ll be a frequent flyer here, is the view and the overall menu. There was something for everyone in our group and I know the bay front sunsets are often spectacular from the wide open decks of Coasterra.

The last visit was a stormy evening so I included the view from their Facebook profile. You can check the Coasterra website as well which will have the most up to date information.

Carnitas Snack Shack on the Embarcadero

With Taco Tuesdays, Happy Hour during the week and fabulous views, who could go wrong with Carnitas Snack Shack? Truly, this is like a pub menu but with California flair. From burritos to pulled pork sandwiches, burgers, tots and even a plate of tacos this is a fun and tasty San Diego hot spot.

On the day we ate here, there was a band bus that played 80’s music for a solid twenty minutes. After that, a DJ took over and kept the atmosphere lively. We got to enjoy some eats, sunshine and music, all with a view of the San Diego Bay. Plus, you’re right near all the trolley tours, boat tours and the U.S.S. Midway Museum is steps away!
