Halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco lies San Luis Obispo, one of California’s lesser-known destinations.

Locals appropriately call it SLO-town (pronounced “slow”). If a slower pace and small-town vibe appeal to you, then San Luis Obispo needs to be on your itinerary. With gorgeous views, abundant outdoor activities, and a thriving cultural scene, this college town has it all.  Here are just a few of the places and activities we recommend.

The businesses and events highlighted are in no way a “Best Of…” list. They are simply places and activities our Savvy Cali Girl contributors have deemed worthy of a shout out. If you want us to tell our readers about your favorite place, tag us with #scgplacestogo and we’ll catch you next time we come through town!

SLO Brew Rock

Now, if you want to unwind, The Rock is home to SLO Brew’s taproom restaurant, kitchen, and event space.

And yes, you guessed it! The casual outdoor setting centers around “the rock”. The space features extensive landscaping, outdoor seating, and fire pits, making it one of the largest venues for events in SLO County.

Additionally, if you’re visiting in November, we encourage you to check out the SLO New Times Music Awards in November. It’s an epic celebration of the area’s local music scene.

Commune with Nature – The San Luis Obispo Hike to the Serenity Swing

To be clear, SLO’s beautiful year-round weather and spectacular views make outdoor activities a popular pastime.

Because of this, we recommend the moderate 3.5-mile trail to Serenity Swing as a must-do. It will take approximately two hours and requires sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and water.

An added bonus, dogs are welcome on the trail!

Sound good? You don’t have to be staying here to enjoy a fabulous meal or just a quick walk through the venue. If you’re planning a November visit you can’t go wrong making reservations at the Gold Rush Steak House for a truly memorable Thanksgiving Day feast.
