The Central Coast is home to many microclimates. Avila Beach has a unique location tucked away in Port San Luis Harbor, sheltered by the hills of the Avila Valley. This creates more sunny days for beachgoers than any other local beach town.

Situated right on the waterfront, the little town of Avila Beach is the hub of all the fun things to do in the Avila Valley. Following  a short scenic drive off the 101, you’ll know it when you hit the beach. From it’s picturesque Promenade of shops, restaurants, and galleries, to the waterfront “Pirates” park and playground, and all the way out to the end of the Pier you’ll find Avila Beach a charming, walkable, welcoming town.

Kraken Coffee Co is a craft coffee favorite in San Luis Obispo County. Avila Beach is home to the original.

The Avila Beach location is just steps from the sand on Front Street. This means you can choose to take your brew for a walk in the sand, stroll down Front Street and window shop, or take a break under the umbrellas and soak in the view on Kraken’s beachfront patio.

If you start your day with a cup of joe and a pastry, you can come back by for an afternoon ice cream break. Don’t forget to check out the upstairs lounge. It’s a great spot to relax and the views are killer.

Eats & Treats on the Shores of Avila Beach, California

Mersea’s

Getting to this restaurant, at the end of Avila’s Harford Pier, is half the fun. The short stroll takes you along the functioning marina.  Consequently, you’ll see commercial fishermen hauling in their fresh catch, charter boats heading out, and a fish market.

Of course, with all those fish come sea lions. They’re often frolicking around the pier and buoys posing for pictures.

Mersea’s has both indoor and outdoor seating with a simple menu of everyone’s favorites. Fresh seafood from the fish market is what shines here. However, there’s also a wide array of salads and sandwiches as well as kid’s meals.

This is a great spot to have lunch while watching the bustling activity of the pier.  Or relax after a day at the beach with a cocktail and a gorgeous California sunset.

Fun In The Sun – Avila Beach Paddlesports

Remember Avila Beach’s unique microclimate? That same combination of elements that make Avila the sunniest beach on the central coast also makes the water a kayaking and paddleboarding paradise.

Avila Beach Paddlesports is owned by a local husband and wife team. They aim to show off their hometown’s spectacular features from the water. Growing up surfing and kayaking the central coast, the two take pride in their role of showcasing their little portion of paradise.

We highly recommend one of the guided tours. Tour groups are small and include wet suits, equipment, water, snacks, and lots of places to stop and take a gorgeous picture.

However, if you’d rather explore on your own that’s totally an option too. You don’t have to be an expert! No hard feelings that you don’t want a tour – they’ll give you free instruction if you need it and send you off well prepared.

Commune with Nature in Avila Beach, California

Pirate’s Cove Nude Beach

www.enjoyavilabeach.com/@avilabeach

If you’re really dedicated to communing with nature, just a short drive south of Avila Beach you can seek out the hidden (and clothing optional) beach – Pirate’s Cove.

Named Pirate’s Cove because it was once used to offload smuggled liquor before ships arrived in Port San Luis Harbor, the beach is popular amongst locals because of its solitude.

If you’re bringing kids, be aware that it is always possible to encounter someone who isn’t wearing clothing if you’re at Pirate’s Cove. There also are no restrooms, lifeguards, or facilities.
