Griffith Park is to Los Angeles what Central Park is to New York – a massive green oasis within a concrete jungle.

Griffith Park, The First Stop In Our Inland Los Angeles Series

We know Los Angeles is a large city with tons to explore, and visitors might be overwhelmed about where to start. In our Los Angeles series, we’ve highlighted the main destinations worth a day or two on your itinerary. We’ve grouped each destination geographically to minimize your time on an L.A. freeway.

Our first stop in Los Angeles is Griffith Park, a sprawling 4,200 acre complex of greenery and attractions. The park areas include the Los Angeles Zoo, the Greek Theatre, a classic Merry-Go-Round, a railroad museum, and even an equestrian center and pony rides. Like Central Park, Griffith Park is also an actual park.

Below are direct links for all the posts in our inland Los Angeles series.

The businesses and events highlighted are in no way a “Best Of…” list. They are simply places and activities our Savvy Cali Girl contributors have deemed worthy of a shout out. If you’re visiting Los Angeles – really anywhere in California, you’re going to have to try tacos in each and every locale. They are delicious and unique everywhere you go. The Best Fish Taco in Ensenada is actually in Los Feliz on Hillhurst near Griffith Park.

They proudly state they are not a restaurant but a taco stand, which is just the kind of vibe you need after a hike in the park or a long day at the zoo. The menu? Well, it’s next to their sign. Yep, that’s it. Saunter up to the counter, order your tacos, take them to the salsa bar and then make them your own. Don’t forget to try the radish relish – these guys do it right!

Fun In The Sun At Griffith Park

Griffith Park & Griffith Observatory

The iconic Griffith Observatory sits on the southern slope of Mount Hollywood in Los Angeles, above the sprawling green spaces of Griffith Park. As a result, the views of Los Angeles from the observatory will amaze even the most jaded traveler. As one visitor pointed out, “the lights of the city at night seemed like an intense version of the night sky but on the ground.”

On another note, Griffith Observatory also boasts one of the best vantage points of the world-famous Hollywood sign.

The Los Angeles Zoo

Looking for a family friendly activity? The Los Angeles Zoo is terrific if you have kiddos. It is not as expansive as some zoos but it is also moderately priced. Like any zoo, if you want to see the larger animals when they are active, visit early in the day or during winter when the heat of a summer day isn’t a factor.

Additionally, we suggest bringing water and snacks as the availability at the zoo can vary throughout the year.

The Greek Theatre

Let’s face it, if outdoor concert venues are your thing, the Greek Theatre will not disappoint. There is nothing quite like being under the stars.

Just a few hints to keep in mind

  1. If you want to take pictures, make sure to do it before the show and before the sun goes down.
  2. Parking can be pricey, but most say it saved an hour of congestion after the show — book seats at least a few rows back for a good view.
  3. Lastly, even in the summer, the evenings can be chilly, so dress accordingly.

Griffith Park, Explore On Foot

Beyond all the established venues within Griffith Park, there are miles of trails, a golf course, community pool, and plenty of picnic areas to satisfy all. The variety of outdoor locations is outstanding.

While you’ll need to keep those pups on a leash at all times, you can take them along to explore caves, run the trails, and enjoy botanical gardens.

There is a healthy balance between free and paid activities throughout the entire park.

The Hollywood Roosevelt

While it’s true there is no shortage of places to stay near Griffith Park, if you want a taste of Hollywood glamour, consider the Hollywood Roosevelt.

So it does feature the usual suspects such as a pool with cabanas, gym, bar, and restaurant, but it’s a popular venue for events as well. This is a fun place so expect party go-ers aplenty.

Additionally, The Spare Room is rather unique offering. It is a gaming parlor and cocktail lounge located on the property. It has the feel of an old cigar room with leather chairs and dark wood. In addition to the many games available from Yahtzee to Scrabble, it includes two bowling lanes.
