Mammoth Lakes is an excellent option for a spectacular California ski weekend. California is far more than wineries and beaches if you’d like a break from the city or the coast. While you may have a bit of a drive, depending on your start point, it is certainly easier and shorter than dealing with flights these days!

Snow season at Mammoth Lakes can start as early as October and usually runs through May. Mammoth is incredibly popular for Southern California residents because of the long California ski season and because there is far less artificial snow than their neighbors to the south in Big Bear.

The two primary locations to ski and snowboard are Mammoth Mountain (the largest and most popular) and June Mountain (smaller area but wider runs and a bit less crowded).  These are sister resorts and lift tickets work at both locations.

Catching Powder is Pricey, Look At An Annual Pass

If you plan on enjoying a lot of ski days in any given season, consider an annual pass. Our contributor purchased the Ikon Pass since it included the most popular California mountain resorts as well as unlimited access to destinations in Colorado, Washington, West Virginia, Vermont and Canada.

There are a variety of options of passes and participating resorts via the Ikon Pass website. They go on sale during the fall or even late summer. Passes are limited so just something to be aware of for next season!
