About Petco Park in San Diego

Petco Park is a baseball only stadium located in downtown San Diego. It is a newer site, within a short walk of San Diego Bay. The entire park feels open, airy and seems designed to take advantage of the amazing weather.

A Few Key Things To Know Before You Go To The Park

  1. If you expect to bring cash to the stadium, leave it at home! Petco Park is entirely digital, no cash accepted whatsoever, not for food, drinks or swag.
  2. Check what you are allowed to bring in to the game. The link provided is the official information since it may change from time to time. The major one is no bag larger than 7″ to 10″ unless it’s an infant bag or medical bag.
  3. Gates open up 90 minutes prior to first pitch.

San Diego Baseball

Without getting into the opinions of fans across the country, San Diego is definitely Padres Proud. We love our legends like Tony Gwynn and Trevor Hoffman.  Sportin’ our gear is a passion. In 2021, We are enjoying a terrific year, after some very disappointing seasons. We’ve got big names like Manny Machado, rising stars like Fernando Tatis and a solid pitching staff. There is definitely excitement in the air in this laid back town!

Definitely learn a few phrases if you want to fit in like Slam Diego, the Swagg Chain and the classic “Hang A Star On That Baby.”

A Ticket For Every Budget

So, in our family, any ticket is an awesome ticket. Why? Well, first, we are usually with family or friends. Second, we are ideally going to eat and drink well. Third, we are out and about enjoying our city and its sunshine. And, lastly, pardon the homerun homage, seeing the Padres have a season like 2021 is exciting!

Now, as far as tickets, you can get seats for the outfield grassy areas, which are super economical and convenient if you have little fans. Even from above, the view and atmosphere is terrific.

But if you have the budget, there is always the option to go big and get box suites, pricey, but for a special occasion, why not!

Getting To The Stadium

While there are usually plenty of paid parking lots near the ballpark in downtown San Diego, they can be really pricey. Prices range from $25 to $35 or more. As a result, I highly recommend alternative options. Personally, I’d rather drop my cash on good food or some Padres swag.

As a local, we park along the trolley line and just ride into downtown. The trolley drops us a block away from a main entrance. In addition to the lower cost, it’s easier and faster to get home. You can walk back on to the trolley and avoid sitting in the downtown traffic exiting the game.

Uber is another option but beware of surge prices upon leaving the game. In many cases, we walked a few blocks away and grabbed a ride outside the immediate vicinity.

Beware The Weather At Petco Park In San Diego

Outfield of Petco Park in San Diego
While San Diego may enjoy a sunny and seventy reputation, the ballpark does cool down significantly as soon as that gorgeous sun sets. The ballpark is positioned just off the bay. Thus, fans will enjoy the coastal, breezy climate conditions. Unlike inland San Diego which is usually much hotter or colder, the ballpark is entirely coastal.

So if you’re heading to the game, slather a bit of sunscreen on, grab that cap and sunglasses but don’t forget a hoodie or jacket either.

It’s All About The Beer At Petco Park In San Diego

There are so many choices of craft beers at Petco Park because San Diego is home to more than 150 breweries. Honestly, it’s one of the best things about the city and this ballpark. I’m not much of a beer drinker, but always partake when enjoying baseball here.

Swinging Friar Ale by Ballast Point
Choose from the signature Swinging Friar Ale by Ballast Point, Coronado Brewing Weekend Vibes, Surf Punk Lager, Kooks IPA and many more. They start at about $10 so many of the fans hit the establishments surrounding the stadium to get the party started and just enjoy their favorites during the game with their baseball grub.

Get Your Grub On Baseball Fans!

Okay, I’ll admit I tend to look forward to the food as much the game. Partly, because it’s an excuse for making indulgent choices but also the atmosphere lends itself to treating the day like a mini vacation.

A few of the newest editions are below.

  • Barrio Dogg serves up true local Tijuana style, bacon-wrapped hot dogs. They have two locations, the first in section 204 on the Terrace Level and also in Gallagher Square.
  • Love BBQ? In section 113, behind 1st base, Grand Ole BBQ serves Texas style barbecue.
  • Puesto Mexican is on the Field level at both 1st and 3rd base in sections 119 and 120. They serve traditional Mexican favorites including margaritas.
Now, they have a lot more to offer throughout the stadium, everything from awesome Pizza from local favorite Pizza Port to fish tacos, vegan options and more. The best source for everything about Petco Park is petcoparkinsider.com which is my first stop before heading to the park!

Word of advice when ordering, leave time for orders to be prepared. It can sometimes take awhile to get that text that your order is ready or for it to arrive at your seat.

Explore & Walk The Park

One of the things we do when we go to a game is walk around the park. There are so many vantage points, little food stalls and different activities. It’s worth it to arrive early and just wander.

For example, the grassy area beyond the outfield is absolutely perfect for families with young children. You can spread a blanket and there are children’s games and areas for the kids to run around.

In years past, we have discovered super cool displays like the one pictured here. It is an actual sand castle! Maybe you’ll even discover a mermaid on your trek.
